Fractions

Kia ora, in problem solving we are learning about proportions and ratios. Me and my buddy, Abbey solved this question. Keahn invited 35 guests to his birthday party, however only five sevenths of the guests were able to come. How many of the guests were able to attend? Here is our thinking.
This is our working out on a whiteboard!

Water Safety

Kia Ora, for two weeks now we have been doing swimming lessons at Pioneer. Today we started water safety, which is where you learn how to act if you fall off a boat and end up in the water. We learnt how to stay warm and stay together in the water. The best part was that we got to wear life jackets! Tomorrow our group is going to learn about boat safety. Here are some photos.
We are making our huddle.

 Do's                                              Don'ts
Stay together                                 Spilt up
Huddle together to stay warm       Freak out
Stay Calm                                      Take life jacket off

Learning how to swim while holding onto somebody.

Brazil Facts

Kia ora, today I am going to share some facts with you about Brazil. Here are my top favourite.

The population in Brazil is over 207.7 people!
The Amazon river is only 11% of Brazil
Football is the most popular sport with their own national team, winning the World Cup five times in a row!
The Amazon river is the worlds largest tropical rain forest.

The Journey

As I quietly creep up the stairs shivering from the cold damp air, the Argentina music plays very loudly. I stand next to my friends, waiting for the Brazil music to play. I feel so nervous I could just break down. As the music plays our part to come on I rush through the curtains to face the blinding lights. I smile to the pitch black audience. I feel the flow of adrenaline as it rushes through me. As the music dies down I feel the  relief as I walk up to the front of the stage for the finale. The music finishes and everybody claps like maniacs as we walk down the aisle. We walk outside to the cold breeze then I think, “All that hard work paid off.”

Maths Talk at Hoon Hay School

At our school we work with a maths mate and share our thinking with them. We ask questions about our maths and if we aren't sure of something, we explain how we do it. We know that 2 brains are often better than one and we enjoy working collaboratively.

Today Abbey and I worked on solving this problem. We used a number line to solve this. " Kyla, Mya and Grace went to the movies. Their tickets cost $14.60 each. How much did their tickets cost altogether?"

How would you solve this?

Our trip to the Art gallery and the Museum

Kia ora, on the 13th of June we went to the Museum and the art gallery. At the art gallery we made a waka huia out of water colours and card. A waka huia is a special box that the chief would keep his huia feathers and the box would hang from the rafters. At the Museum we learnt all about solar energy. We made solar powered cars! Although they didn’t work because it was grey rainy day. I loved the museum and the art gallery, I really want to go again. Here are some photos, hope you enjoy them!

We got to touch a Green stone!
Anthony was our tour guide, he was teaching us about solar energy!
Here I am, designing my waka huia.
This was our team car, Mr. Pushee!

Poetry

In writing, I have used a poem by James K. Baxter as a starting point to write my own holiday poem. I hope you like it.
Mackenzie’s James K Baxter Inspired Poetry

My cousin’s backyard was usual enough;
It had orange Nerf guns, blue and orange bullets, trees swaying in the breeze, green prickly bushes, and even a frisky cat.
My cousins, brother and I did what kids do -
Dodging bullets, shooting my brother, hiding in the prickly bushes, finding bullets in the swaying trees, and adding more bullets to our stash at our secret base near the bushes

Doing nothing important.
